'Now More than Ever' the theme of UNA AGM, opening tomorrow

36th Annual General Meeting

United Nurses of Alberta, 36th Annual General Meeting, Nov. 19-21, 2013

The Annual General Meeting of the United Nurses of Alberta opens in Edmonton tomorrow morning, and the more than 700 delegates and other participants will be focused on the fact, now more than ever, that nurses and all working people need unions.

That’s part of why “Now More than Ever” is the theme for the three-day AGM, which will be called to order at 9 a.m. on Nov. 19, followed immediately by an address by UNA President Heather Smith.

Delegates democratically elected by UNA’s 27,000 members will deal with negotiations for a new Provincial Collective Agreement with Alberta Health Services and other major employers, the assault on members’ pensions by the Redford Government, and job eliminations at Alberta Health Care facilities.

Along with bargaining, confronting employer plans to attack nurses’ workplace rights and replace nurses with unskilled and unregulated health care workers, advocacy for the nursing profession and a healthy society will be major topics at the AGM.

Among the key speakers will be Linda Silas, president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions.

The 36th AGM runs until Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Edmonton EXPO Centre, 7515 118 Ave.
