Thousands of Albertans voice concerns about proposed pension plan changes

The Labour Coalition on Pensions, the Telephone Town Hall featured Vancouver-based pension expert Brendan George in conversation with UNA President Heather Smith, AFL President Gil McGowan, HSAA President Elisabeth Ballermann and CUPE Alberta President Marle Roberts. The event was moderated by CBC radio personality Jana O’Connor.

More than 2,200 Albertans participated in an important Telephone Town Hall on Jan. 21 to discuss proposed changes to Alberta’s public-sector pensions.

Hosted by the Labour Coalition on Pensions, the Telephone Town Hall featured Vancouver-based pension expert Brendan George in conversation with UNA President Heather Smith, AFL President Gil McGowan, HSAA President Elisabeth Ballermann and CUPE Alberta President Marle Roberts. The event was moderated by CBC radio personality Jana O’Connor.

The meeting coincided with the launch of a new campaign, TruthAboutAlbertaPensions.ca. The new campaign website features an interactive pension calculator, a video promoting the campaign and important information about the proposed changes to the Local Authories Pension Plan. Also included on the website is a form letter that allows Albertans to directly contact their Member of the Legislative Assembly about the proposed changes.

The Labour Coalition on Pensions includes the United Nurses of Alberta, Alberta Federation of Labour, Alberta Colleges Institutes Faculty Association, Canadian Union of Public Employees, Health Sciences Association of Alberta, International Association of Firefighters, Non-Academic Staff Association, Unifor, Civic Service Union 52, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the International Union of Operating Engineers.
