UNA offers condolences to the family of former premier Jim Prentice

The death of former Alberta premier Jim Prentice in the crash of a small aircraft in southern British Columbia late yesterday has now been confirmed.

“This is a very sad day for all Albertans,” said United Nurses of Alberta First Vice-President Jane Sustrik. “On behalf of all members of UNA, I want to convey our deepest condolences to Mr. Prentice’s entire family on this shocking and tragic occasion.”

“Mr. Prentice’s contributions to public life and the government of Alberta earned the respect of members of all political parties and people from throughout Alberta,” she said.

Prentice, who was 60, was aboard a twin-engine Cessna Citation business jet that disappeared from radar shortly after taking off from Kelowna Airport yesterday night. The small jet was en route to Springbank Airport west of Calgary.

The wreckage was found last night west of Kelowna. Officials said at the time all four persons aboard had been killed.

Prentice served as Alberta premier from September 2014, when he won the leadership of Progressive Conservative Party, until the general election of May 2015. Before becoming premier, he served as vice-chair and senior executive vice-president of the Bank of Commerce from 2010 to 2014, and in federal politics as the MP for Calgary Centre-North from 2004 to 2010, filling several portfolios in prime minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet.
