Nurses Became Employees
During the Depression in Canada, hospitals, governments, and doctors were faced with the responsibility of taking care of very ill patients who did not have the money to hire nurses privately. The hospitals, doctors and governments seized the opportunity to transform the economic relationship between patients and nurses by offering nurses an employment relationship in the hospitals. The vast majority of nurses were then subject to a new set of employer-employee rules governing how they practised their professional duties.
