Majority of Nurses Not Employees
The majority of nurses were not employees.  Hospitals were staffed mainly by religious orders, student nurses and management nurses.

60% of Alberta nurses worked on an entrepreneurial basis and negotiated wages and working conditions individually with patients or their families; 25% of Alberta nurses were employed by the hospitals; and the remaining 15% worked in public health facilities.
