Content: Calgary Region finally agrees to pay car allowance
Agreement: Provincial Agreement - Article 10.05 Transportation
Date: April 2005
_______________________________
Calgary Health Region recently contacted UNA to finally acknowledge they must pay the $130 a month vehicle allowance and are implementing a plan to pay it. UNA had filed grievances after the Region failed to begin paying the allowances on June 9, 2004 when the Collective Agreement provision came into effect.
The Region’s plan is to begin paying the allowance in early June. Calgary Region also acknowledged it must pay retroactivity to June 9 on the allowances, but says they do not expect this will occur until sometime during the summer.
UNA is continuing to pursue the grievances and will be asking for interest on the amount that was left unpaid for so many months. The car allowance reimburses expenses Employees pay out of their own pockets to run a vehicle that they are required to use in their work.
CHR also says they will be reviewing which nurses are eligible to receive the allowance. Any nurses who receive a letter saying they will no longer be eligible for the allowance should contact their UNA representative immediately.
The $130 allowance is for EVERY nurse who needs to use a personal automobile during the course of his or her work. The allowance is pro-rated for Part-time and Casual Employees. It is on top of the 0.38c per kilometer reimbursement, and the extra cost of business use insurance, which the Employer must also pay.
