Patients are losing patience with AHS re-announcements

The United Nurses of Alberta is calling on Alberta Health Services to stop re-announcing, and instead actually open the promised 132 new beds in three Calgary Hospitals. UNA was encouraged when the announcement was first made on June 25, 2010, but the re-announcement of the new beds this week highlights AHS's focus on public relations management before patient-care priorities.

"AHS can re-announce the opening of these new beds as many times as it wants, but patient care will not improve until the new beds actually open," said UNA Secretary/Treasurer Karen Craik.

"This was a good news story in June 2010, now it is a recycled news story," said Karen Craik. "Opening these beds would be a much better news story for patients than another re-announcement."

The re-announcement of the 132 new beds is highlighted by nearly identical Fact Sheets released by AHS on June 25, 2010 and September 8, 2010:
