How do we help nurses caught up in addiction? United Nurses of Alberta and the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) have an on-going dialogue on the topic. In recognition of National Addiction Awareness Week, we are making available here a number of important documents examining how we treat nurses struggling with addictions.
In its latest magazine CARNA published an article, The Facts PDF , which responds to a UNA article PDF on the topic of how to assist or deal with nurses struggling with addiction.
UNA invited prominent addiction psychiatrist Charl Els as a special speaker at the the recent provincial general meeting. Els has clear recommendations on evidence-based practices with addicted employees.
UNA has several recommendations for CARNA on the process for nurses and addictions. UNA is sending the CARNA Council a detailed position paper recommending alternative complaint resolution in many cases.
How to treat addiction has also been a prominent topic in British Columbia, raised by a front-page story in the Vancouver Sun. The B.C. College responded with their perspective, that private treatment is more constructive than public punishment.
