The Canadian Federation of Nursing Unions has now released a video of its 30th Annual Conference, which took place from June 13 to June 17 in Winnipeg and was attended by 170 representatives of the United Nurses of Alberta.
In all, approximately 800 nurses from across Canada took part in the conference workshops, were inspired and energized by the speakers, walked the picket line with locked-out members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and partook of the fun that were all part of this important event.
The video, which shows scenes from the conference and brings greetings from the presidents of member nurses’ unions, celebrates the organization’s 30th anniversary – which was marked in the same city as CFNU’s original conference.
“It’s pretty amazing how quickly nurses’ unions across Canada formed a national body after the original provincial organizations were formed in the late 1970s,” UNA President Heather Smith observes in the video.
“It speaks to the intention of nurses to not only organize in their province but to come together nationally,” she said.
CFNU President Linda Silas tells of how Canadian nurses were determined to build their own national organization. “We needed to do it on our own and we needed to be successful,” Silas says. “Today we’re representing health care professionals across this country in a very significant way.”
