CLC calls for better pensions,
and better pensions for women on IWD

The wage gap at work follows women into retirement, resulting in high levels of poverty among senior women. In 2008, women aged 65 years and older on average received incomes that were 65% of those of men of the same age. In 2004, 7.3% of retired women lived in poverty, more than double the rate of retired men. An astounding 45.6% of single, divorced or widowed elderly women lived in poverty, according to a 2004 study. PDF

Canadian women still earning only
72 cents for every dollar earned by men

While nurses have managed to achieve an above average wage through collective bargaining, many Canadian women are falling further behind. Women's earnings began to climb at the end of the 1960s, as did nursing salaries. But since about 1990 women's wages in the country have been lagging behind men's wages. The lack of progress on women's equality is mirrored by growing disparity in Canada as a whole. This sampled index from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives highlights unfair distribution of resources in Canada.
