"Don't cut seniors out!"
Friends of Medicare and seniors
groups rally in Edmonton

Over 75 people, many of them seniors, rallied for public health services in front of MLA Dr. Raj Sherman's office in west Edmonton on Saturday, March 21.

"I don't want to be the person who has to tell my daughter, oh gee, we dropped the ball and lost our public medicare system, because we were just too busy, or because we thought we couldn't afford it, or because we thought we couldn't look after all the seniors after they'd put in a whole lifetime of work," David Eggen, executive director of Friends of Medicare told the people at the event.

The Seniors Action Liaison Team (SALT), the Canadian Association of Retired People and other concerned seniors' organizations also helped pull together the event.

The seniors about government plans for our health system generally, and about the new charges for prescriptions and the move to costly for-profit long-term care.

"You've all helped to put an exclamation point on the thousands of petitions and letters we've sent to our MLAs," David Eggen said.

"Underneath what they [the government MLAs] say is the policy of what they actually do. What they want to do is put the burden of restricted medicine on to middle class seniors, on to people who need health care and make them pay for everyone else," Eggen said.

Retired nurses Mary-Jane Buchanan and Joan Bowes were supporting the rally. "This idea of charging for services is not medicare," says Joan. "They're looking at ways of taking money from public services."

Mary-Jane says: "The new bill on long-term care worries me very much. We should be building more publicly run LTC facilities, not for profit businesses."

Between them Mary-Jane and Joan have worked for decades in nursing positions all across Alberta and even across Canada. They are now both very concerned about the future of the universal public health care.
