Speaking on the Rutherford Show on January 5, MLA Rob Anderson told host Dave Rutherford that MLAs are not allowed to vote their conscience when in the Government caucus, including in the decision to close beds at Alberta Hospital Edmonton.
"I challenge them (Tories) to say that there is actually free debate and free votes in the caucus," said Anderson. "There's example after example of this, like the closure of beds at the Alberta Hospital. I mean it just goes on and on."
Anderson is the MLA for Airdrie-Chestermere, and on January 4, he and Calgary-Fish Creek MLA Heather Forsyth left the PC caucus to join the Wildrose Alliance.
UNA has called on nurses to email their MLA to show their support for the essential mental health services provided by Alberta Hospital Edmonton.
Despite the "pause" announced by Premier Ed Stelmach, planning is proceeding for the closure of most of the beds at the province's largest mental health facility.
