Generally, nurses are too modest, said author, lawyer and health advocate Maureen McTeer at today's session of the UNA AGM as she urged delegates to make an on-line submission to the Canadian Nursing Association's National Expert Commission of the future of health care.

Nurses' advice in particular is needed, said McTeer, the co-chair of the commission, because you are the backbone of Canadas health care system.

You have earned the right to be at the tables where the large policy decisions of the day are discussed and decided.

CNA launched its first National Expert Commission in May 2011 to contribute to the transformation of health care in Canada. The CNA says its commission will consult with Canadians to develop recommendations to help shape the health-care system into one that is better equipped to meet the changing needs of Canadians.

With the looming expiry of the health accord in 2014, the future of Canadians health care is at a critical juncture, the CAN says on its website.

We are trying to add nurses voices, said McTeer.

UNA President Heather Smith is a member of the commission.
