United Nurses of Alberta Executive Board members voted last week to donate $10,000 to the Japanese Nursing Association in the wake of the damage caused by recent earthquakes, tsunamis, and the damaged nuclear power plant. UNA is joining other Canadian provincial nurses unions who are also providing financial donations through the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU).

Letter from CFNU President Linda Silas:

Japan Disaster: CFNU is raising funds for the Japanese Nursing Association

Dear members,

On March 11th a disastrous earthquake and tsunami hit Japan and today they are faced with treats of nuclear leaks. On March 18th, I contacted our colleagues in Japan to offer our condolences and support. Of course, being so far away the best support we can give them is a financial boost. Since March 25th, CFNU has opened a fund for JNA and to-date we have raised $28,000.

All your provincial unions are examining the possibility of donating funds. If your local/branch is interested, please contact your provincial union for instructions. Thank you in advance.

The first week of May, I will be attending the ICN meetings in Malta where I hope to meet with our Japanese colleagues. I will bring to them a strong message of solidarity on your behalf.

Merci!

In solidarity always.

Linda Silas
President, CFNU
