UNA Communications Officer Dave Cournoyer talks with members of Local 121 about social media.

CALGARY - United Nurses of Alberta Communications Officer Dave Cournoyer met with executive members from Local 121 (Rockyview General Hospital) this week to discuss how they can use social media tools to connect and engage with Local members.

"Social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube give the union movement a way to connect with members who, for whatever reason, are not already connected to their Union or Local," said Cournoyer.

The UNA Facebook Page has attracted over 3,100 "Likes" since it was launched in early 2010 and has become a vibrant online destination for UNA members. UNA's Twitter account (@UnitedNurses) has attracted almost 2,000 followers in the same amount of time.

UNA has used YouTube videos as an education tool and a way to respond to current events. Most recently, UNA has produced videos explaining the Regularization process and responding to Alberta Health Services' rapid hiring of Registered Nurses.

"Social media tools don't replace the traditional ways we are communicating with our members, but they give us some additional tools to use," said Cournoyer.
