Monday is Labour Day and the Edmonton and District Labour Council will be holding its annual BBQ for the unemployed and under-employed from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Giovanni Caboto Park, 95th Street and 109th Avenue.
EDLC President Brian Henderson describes the event as an opportunity for the labour movement in the Edmonton area to show that we care not just for our own members, but for the whole community.
Volunteers from among Edmonton-area unions who have good paying and relatively secure employment are urged to volunteer to help serve the less fortunate, Henderson said. "Their struggle is our struggle."
"So if you have time on Monday, Sept. 5, come out and show our community that we do care and will continue to fight for dignity and respect for all," he added.
The plight of the unemployed particularly illustrates the need for improvements to the Canada Pension Plan, not just for working people today but for generations to come, Henderson noted.
