Edmonton Nurses demonstrating
at Labour Board hearing
Nurses’ Information Picket
11 am to 1pm
Monday, Oct. 20, 2003
Offices of the Alberta Labour Relations Board 10808 - 99 Avenue
Edmonton-area nurses will be demonstrating outside the offices of the Labour Relations Board to demand that the province’s Health Regions return to the bargaining table to negotiate a new contract. The LRB is holding a hearing today on a complaint from the United Nurses of Alberta that the Regions are failing to negotiate in good faith.
UNA President Heather Smith will be available for comment at the picket at Noon today.
Today’s demonstration is part of a week-long push by nurses to motivate the Regions to return to the bargaining table and negotiate constructively. The nurses plan to return to demonstrate outside the LRB if the hearing continues for a second day tomorrow.
Across the province, UNA nurses are organizing similar events to put pressure on Health Regions. Last Friday, Calgary-area nurses held an information picket outside the constituency office of Health and Wellness Minister Gary Mar.
In Edmonton, nurses are holding a public information forum on the dangers of imposing an unsafe contract Monday October 27th, 2003 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Lions Senior Citizens Recreation Centre 7524 -139 Avenue.
The campaign includes radio and newspaper advertising saying the Regions must stop trying to force nurses into an unsafe contract with arbitration.
