UNA steps up pressure on Long-term Care and Cancer Board Employers

Nurses are taking to the picket line again today to keep pressure on the Long-term Care Employers who refuse to meet the contract standards in negotiations. And on Friday the nurses’ union filed an unfair labour practice complaint against the Alberta Cancer Board.

“Nurses will take as much action as necessary to make sure that nurses in Long-term Care and at the Cancer Board do not get left behind,” UNA President Heather Smith said today.

“The Cancer Board negotiators have not made a reasonable effort to reach an agreement and they have gone back and forth on what their demands are,” Heather Smith pointed out. “That, along with sending misleading information to the nurses, constitutes a violation of labour law. ”

The Alberta Labour Relations Board (LRB) is holding a hearing Tuesday, June 22, 2004, on UNA’s request that the Alberta Cancer Board be required to vote on the union’s last offer. No date has as yet been set for the LRB to rule on Friday’s complaint that the Cancer Board has failed to negotiate in good faith.

Talks continue today with the Long-term Care Employers, the Continuing Care Employers Bargaining Association of Alberta (CCEBA). No further negotiation dates have been set with the Cancer Board.
