Negotiate don’t arbitrate: nurses’ message to Board members
From 9:30 am Tuesday, November 4, 2003
Capri Centre, Red Deer, 32 Street and Gaetz Avenue.
David Thompson Health Region nurses are holding an informational picket outside the meeting of the Health Region Board meeting at the Capri Centre on Tuesday, November 4.
“We want a negotiated contract,” says Sandra Zak, President of the UNA Local #2 at the Red Deer Hospital. “The appointed Health Region board members need to realize how important it is to their nurses not to have an agreement imposed through legislation or arbitration.”
She said the Board members need to see how strongly nurses feel about getting a collective agreement that improves conditions and does not endanger safe patient care. “With any kind of imposed contract, we are looking at the kind of conditions that 98.8% of nurses voted against last month. Nurses absolutely will not stand for worsening conditions that can affect safe patient care.”
The nurses’ picket is beginning at 9:30 am at 32 Street by the SE Capri Centre parking lot. The nurses will be walking up 32 Street and alongside Gaetz Avenue. The Health Region’s Board meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 am in the Capri Centre.
