Thousands of Albertans rally for retirement security

More than 2000 Albertans rallied for retirement security in Edmonton's Churchill Square on March 2, 2014.

United Nurses of Alberta members from across the province joined more than 2,000 Albertans at a rally for retirement security in Edmonton's Churchill Square on the afternoon March 2, 2014. Despite the cold weather and a -33C windchill, the crowd gathered to send a strong message to Premier Alison Redford and Finance minister Doug Horner that they are concerned about proposed changes to public sector pensions.

At the rally, UNA President Heather Smith participated in a mock ceremony where Redford was named the winner of a “Political Academy Award” for her remarkable promise-breaking performance persuading so many Albertans she would fight to protect their right to a secure retirement.

Many UNA members are contributors to the Local Authorities Pension Plan and are concerned that the changes could negatively impact their retirement security.

The rally was organized by the Labour Coalition on Pensions. To learn more, visit truthaboutalbertapensions.ca.
