United Nurses of Alberta’s 40th AGM to open Tuesday morning

United Nurses of Alberta will welcome more than 1,000 delegates and other participants to its 40th Annual General Meeting in Edmonton on Tuesday.

The union – which today represents more than 30,000 Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses and allied health care workers – was formally created on May 6, 1977. Its AGMs are traditionally held in the fall.

The theme of the three-day AGM is 40 years At Your Side and On Your Side.

Delegates elected by UNA members will commence business at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, with reports from President Heather Smith and other senior union officials beginning immediately after the call to order.

Speakers at this year’s meeting will include Madam Justice Sheila Greckol, who before her appointment as a judge of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench in 2001 was a respected Alberta labour lawyer, and Canadian Nurses Association Chief Executive Officer Michael Villeneuve.

Delegates will also hear from Linda Silas, president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions, Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour, and a representative of Alberta’s Local Authorities Pension Plan.

Elections for representatives of the union’s five districts and for First Vice-President and Second Vice-President are scheduled to take place during the AGM. Sessions dealing with the elections will be open to members only.

The meeting at the Edmonton Expo Centre will adjourn at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2017.
