Labour Board to discuss constitutional issue related to Nurse Practitioners application

The Alberta Labour Relations Board has scheduled a conference call on June 29, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with Chair William J. Johnson to address the question of whether the Board is the appropriate forum to determine the Constitutional issue and determine how the Board will proceed with this matter.

The conference call is being held in response to issues raised by Alberta Health Services in their reply to UNA’s initial application to the Board.

The parties involved in the application are invited to participate in the call.

On April 5, 2018, lawyers acting for the United Nurses of Alberta filed an application with the Board seeking a determination that the union can represent Nurse Practitioners.

UNA’s application argues that portions of the Alberta Labour Code preventing Nurse Practitioners from being represented by a union violate the right to freedom of association guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
