NPAA responds to constitutional issue related to Nurse Practitioners application

The law firm representing the Nurse Practitioners Association of Alberta has submitted a response to the question of whether the Alberta Labour Relations Board is the most appropriate forum to determine the constitutional issue put forward in UNA’s Nurse Practitioner application.

The Alberta Labour Relations Board has scheduled a conference call on June 29, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with Chair William J. Johnson to address this question and determine how the Board will proceed with this matter.

The conference call is being held in response to issues raised by Alberta Health Services in their reply to UNA’s initial application to the Board.

On April 5, 2018, lawyers acting for the United Nurses of Alberta filed an application with the Board seeking a determination that the union can represent Nurse Practitioners.

UNA’s application argues that portions of the Alberta Labour Code preventing Nurse Practitioners from being represented by a union violate the right to freedom of association guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
