UNA's Jane Sustrik speaks up for safe patient care on Alberta Primetime

Hundreds of United Nurses of Alberta members represented by Local 33 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital joined an information walk in front of the Edmonton hospital last week.

United Nurses of Alberta Second Vice-President Jane Sustrik was interviewed on Alberta Primetime about the impact of nurse layoffs on safe patient care in Alberta hospitals.

All across Alberta, Registered Nurse, Registered Psychiatric Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse jobs are disappearing as the government of Alberta and Alberta Health Services implement staffing changes they call “Workforce Transformation” and the “Clinical Workforce Strategic Plan.”

They’re replacing educated and skilled nurses, whose profession is regulated, with non-professional and unregulated Health Care Aides.

"It's taking the number of nurses away who are going to deliver direct patient care," said Sustrik. "It's a big loss for patient care."
