UNA welcomes appointment of new Alberta Health Services board

United Nurses of Alberta welcomes today’s announcement by Health Minister Sarah Hoffman that a new Alberta Health Services Board has been appointed to govern the provincial health authority. AHS has been governed by an Official Administrator since the previous government dissolved the former board in 2013.

The new board, chaired by former Edmonton Journal publisher and University of Alberta chancellor Linda Hughes, includes individuals with a broad knowledge of health care and administration in Alberta.

“Together, this board holds a tremendous amount of experience and talent, and we will do our utmost to serve the interests of Albertans and to support the committed and hardworking people within AHS,” Hughes said in a statement today.

UNA looks forward to developing a productive working relationship with the new board members and hopes to make progress in areas that will improve patient safety and workplace conditions for Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses working in Alberta’s publicly-funded and publicly-delivered health care system.

UNA had requested a meeting with the Official Administrator earlier this week and now hopes to meet with the board to discuss issues important to nurses in Alberta.

The members of the AHS Board are:

  • Linda Hughes (Chair)
  • Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn (Vice-Chair)
  • David Carpenter
  • Hugh D. Sommerville
  • Marliss Taylor
  • Glenda Yeates
  • Richard Dicerni
