UNA to recommend ratification of mediator's recommendation

Mediator David Jones today issued recommendations to resolve ongoing negotiations between United Nurses of Alberta and Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health, Lamont Health Centre and Bethany Group (Camrose).

In addition to items already agreed to during 14 months of bargaining, the Mediator’s recommendations included the following points:

  • Four-year term (April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2017)
  • A single province-wide health care plan for AHS employees (Covenant Health will also have a single benefit plan)
  • Requirement for the parties to establish a forum for good-faith discussions to improve the effectiveness of the PRC process and address concerns about safe staffing

The Mediator recommended the following wage changes:

  • April 1, 2013: $2,000 lump sum (pro-rated for part-time and casual employees)
  • April 1, 2014: 2-per-cent increase to the salary appendix plus a $1,000 lump sum (pro rated for part-time and casual employees)
  • April 1, 2015: 2.25-per-cent increase to the salary appendix plus a $1,000 lump sum (pro rated for part-time and casual employees)
  • April 1, 2016: 3-per-cent increase to the salary appendix

The Mediator’s recommendation also calls for:

  • Current semi-annual lump sum payments to continue
  • Designated days of rest to be maintained for part-time employees
  • An increased professional fee reimbursement of $250 per year from $100

The UNA negotiating committee is recommending ratification.

The employer bargaining committee is also recommending ratification to all employers participating in these negotiations.

Complete details of the Mediator’s recommendation will be provided to the UNA Reporting Meeting, July 15, 2014, in Calgary.
